Operation of the literacy center and dressmaking center(Yaounde, Cameroon)

Established in 1998 for the personal and professional development of the youth from the parish of St. Marie Mediatrice at Etoudi (district of Yaounde), it currently exists within the Idente youth multi-purpose center, on the property adjacent to the residence of the Idente missionaries of Yaounde.

Approximately twenty-five women, of the age of 15 years and older, regularly participate in the classes. Many are mothers, and all have very little financial means, which didn’t enable them to begin or finish their primary and secondary education. They belong to different ethnic groups and religions.

Activities at the center:
Dressmaking classes: The training is for a duration of 3 years, and participants will be awarded a certificate at completion. The funds received will provide several youth with a sewing machine which will also enable them to start earning a living or for others, to continue their professional secondary education in another educational center. It is the case of one of the students who is now a teacher in the dressmaking center.
– Literacy classes and the preparation for the primary education examination
– Health training.
– Personal and spiritual training.

The objective of the trainings is that once completed, the youth can integrate into the work world. The center also makes it possible to reach out to many families and to help as many people as possible both financially and personally.

Bertha Caiza, Idente missionary and Director of the center, ensures the operation of the center and the education provided with the assistance of former students.
